"Housing for lower-income families has been creeping upscale. Mostly gone are the ugly brown and tan brick-barracks style housing clusters of the past. Affordable housing these days mimics many of the architectural and design flourishes of expensive, market-rate homes. Features more commonly associated with middle-class suburbia -- brick detailing, copper trim, warm oak kitchen cabinets, private entrances and lush landscaping -- are fast becoming de rigueur in affordable-housing circles."
