Condo developers have tapped into a previously unrecognized condo market, and the infusion of development money is reshaping California's southernmost big city.
San Diego's renaissance is based on much more than a new ballpark. Led by developer interest from its northern neighbors who changed the fortunes and design of Vancouver, British Columbia, downtown San Diego is riding high--bucking the trend of California's suburban development pattern and heavily investing in the urban center. Its residential success may be too great, however, because the office market has not matched the highrise condos that are now selling for $1,000,000 plus, causing sprawl to remain as urban dwellers clog the roads out to suburban office parks.
