Streets should be both a physical and social part of our living environment.

In many countries outside of the United States, "the integration of traffic and residential activity in the same space is a concept that has stimulated new design configurations that increase social interaction and safety on the street and promote pedestrian movement." This type of design can help resolve "the conflict between providing for easy traffic flow and the destruction of the residential and architectural fabric of the street."
