Virginia town votes for candidates committed to reining in Wal-Mart.
"Last week, residents of this town of about 13,000 held their municipal election and sent a loud message about the vista and their community to one of America's biggest and most successful retail corporations. Voters elected a new mayor and three new council members who all ran on the promise that they'd fight to keep a Wal-Mart superstore off the 121-acre tract next to the river. The vote was not one to keep Wal-Mart out of town -- just to move it away from the town's beauty and closer to Interstate 66. Residents, it seems, want the convenience of Wal-Mart without the congestion that an estimated 14,000 additional vehicles would bring to the proposed 184,000-square-foot, 24-hour superstore."
