Elizabeth Farrelly looks at the suggestions for redeveloping Parramatta Road (Sydney’s busiest road) and the reality that high street ambience and retail can’t work along a major arterial route that doesn’t offer car parking and suffers from the noise and grime of up to 87,000 cars per day. She explains that the proposal of higher density nodes along a transit route with cars redirected along an extension to the existing motorway would require money, political will and political courage.
