Latinos are expected to be a majority of Los Angeles County residents by 2014 and of Californians by 2040.
"Los Angeles County is expected to have half of its residents - or about 5.3 million of the estimated 10.6 million people - come from Hispanic backgrounds within the next 10 years. Hispanics will be the majority of Californians by 2040 - 25.9 million out of 51.5 million residents... 'I think they will be very different people in 2020,' [Dowell Myers, a professor of urban planning and demography at the University of Southern California] said. 'The children won't be like the parents. They will be people who have graduated from high school. They will be people who are homeowners and no longer in rentals... People sometimes are afraid because they think it will be like the new immigrants, only bigger and bigger. But these will be people more like the middle-class, working-class Americans in general.' "
