John King reviews the 15 pound Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture. American architecture doesn't fare particularly well.
"There are more buildings from the Netherlands and Switzerland (92), for instance, than from the entire United States outside of Southern California (87). The lone San Francisco nod goes to Stanley Saitowitz's Yerba Buena Lofts, a concrete-and-glass mosaic on Folsom Street that looks like a row of piston rods frozen mid-churn... The best buildings in the atlas are the ones that capture the sensibility of their location but then add fresh innovations and thought."
