Experts are eyeing city planning as the next front in the war on obesity.
"Policy makers and city planners are becoming increasingly concerned that suburban sprawl is forcing people to spend far too much time in their cars. Relatively few towns have accessible paths for biking or walking, or just places to get out and play. As if making an effort to deter physical activity, developers of many new subdivisions don't even install sidewalks... 'The development of suburbs just evolved in the context of no knowledge about its impact on health,' says Elias Zerhouni, MD, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). 'We can no longer do this in the 21st century.' "
