Bruce Katz of the Brookings Institution said that the Kansas City area has great potential to become 'the capital of the Heartland'. "Katz, director of the metropolitan policy center at the Washington think tank, is working with the regional council and the Civic Council of top business executives on a report outlining Kansas City's competitiveness and challenges compared with other metropolitan areas...In terms of growth pattern, Kansas City is one of the nation's kings of sprawl. A higher-than-average proportion of jobs are more than 10 miles from the city's center."
