'Living Wage' Law Upheld In Court

California courts say Berkeley's zone-based selective 'living wage' is legal in a victory for fair-pay advocates.

Berkeley's law, passed in 2000, had forced businesses signing leases at the city's marina to pay a 'living wage' while the rest of town could continue paying the minimum. The basis of the suit, which conceded Berkeley's right to regulate wages, was that by only legislating for a 'living wage' at the marina, the city had created a double-standard.
