Monorail Takes Summer Holiday

The Seattle transportation experiment will miss out on the tourist months as officials debate the future of the fire-damaged trains.

Following a Memorial Day fire on the line's "Blue Train," Seattle's famous monorail faces an uncertain future. Lacking a catwalk between the rails, the line cannot be used safely without a backup train, hence the closure. Damage to the "Blue Train" may be so severe, the 42-year-old line may never open again; the entire project is scheduled to be demolished in 2005 to make way for an expanded system to West Seattle.
