Seattle Architects Fight For Bridge Vision

Two local designers want a signature suspension bridge over Elliott Bay to replace a dilapidated highway viaduct.

While the city of Seattle readies a $4 billion plan to create a tunnel in place of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, new designs from local architects are fueling the discussion of how to balance traffic and aesthetics. Both plans call for a suspension bridge to cross the bay, not only fulfilling traffic needs but also creating a visual landmark to the city's west. The state, which will announce its plans in late summer, denies the viability of a bridge project.
