By the end of 2005, Milwaukee will boast eight design-savvy new bridges.
New spans seem to have been sprouting around Milwaukee ever since the creation in 2001 of Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava's cabled white footbridge between the Milwaukee Art Museum and O'Donnell Park. Just four years later, Brewtown will boast a total of eight new bridges with an eye toward pedestrians. The bridges connect more than neighborhoods---the crossings are also being recognized a "points of reconciliation," often replacing previous markers of historic rivalries or racial tensions.
