Echoing the airplane-vs.-freeway battle between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the Toronto Community Foundation sponsored a race from North York to the downtown as part of study of commuter health. Surprisingly, the cyclist made the trip in 26 minutes, the subway took 35, and the driver 36. But in the following test, a commute from the urban center to a suburban mall, a convoluted mass transit system and lack of traffic gave the win to the automobile.
