The city long considered to be a walker's paradise now rates as one of the nation's most dangerous cities for pedestrians.
While the country overall pedestrian death rate declines, San Francisco ranks as one of the nation's most dangerous cities for pedestrians. Eighteen pedestrians have died so far this year. By this time last year the city had recorded eight pedestrian deaths. Growing population, increasing number of cars and poorly designed sidewalks are some of the causes. "San Francisco is a walkable big city placed in the middle of a car-oriented region," said Gabriel Metcalf, deputy director of the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, a public policy think-tank.
