The continuing Asian-American population explosion in the San Gabriel Valley east of downtown Los Angeles has changed the redevelopment pattern. In the city of San Gabriel, the formerly bland Valley Boulevard corridor has become a multicultural shopping destination, and the city is taking preliminary steps toward improving the urban character of the area. A calendar of multicultural bookings has revived a historic civic auditorium, and even the moribund Mission District is showing signs of life.
