Competing in one of the hottest real estate markets, theMidpeninsula Regional Open Space District has found themselves outbid inefforts to buy rural parcels to preserve open space in the region. Apiece of property that sold at under $1 million four years ago has nowbeen pushed up to $3.5 million, prices that have far outpaced the growthin property tax revenues that the district relies on to buy and protectland. Similar organizations have made offers on land without the fundsto acquire it, banking on philanthropy and donations to complete thedeal.
