High-mileage motherhood is becoming a standard practice for many American families, despite the equally high stress factor.

Mothers of school-age children are now spending over 8.5 hours in the car each week as the family chauffeur. Experts blame car-dependent suburban development patterns that discourage walking, bicycling, or using mass transit with limiting kids' mobility and obliging parents, especially moms, to serve as taxi driver.
