City plans to launch a temporary low-cost voucher program for cab rides to compensate for the need for more public transit in the area.
The City of Keokuk will offer "discounted rides to residents through a privately owned cab company. Information gleaned from the vouchers will be used to determine the need among the city's poor and disabled for cheap transportation."
After losing their contract with a bus company in 2003, the county in which Keokuk is located contracted with another transit authority, which "effectively ended on-damand transportation services in Keokuk." City officials say that the vouchers would provide help to residents in need of transportation, as well as to local businesses.
One obstacle city officials anticipate is how to accomodate voucher users with disabilities, for whom the cabs are not adequately equipped.
