An idea long used in European and Asian cities, stacked parking is now being discussed in San Francisco.
San Francisco's parking crunch is making the city think about stacked parking as a solution. An idea long used in European and Asian cities stacked parking employs mini-elevators or robotic systems to stack cars atop each other. One reason for the lack of enthusiasm shown by some to the idea is the fact that commuters have to wait 45 seconds to upward of three minutes to retrieve their cars. While these automated garages are more expensive than the usual structures, in dense cities such as San Francisco, they can be an option worth considering. One Berkeley company that adopted the system says it has been a boon to its mixed-use, residential-retail projects, "...freeing upspace for street-front shops where parking otherwise wouldhave gone."
