Fields, grasslands, and forest are at home among the modernist houses being developed along the Zumbro River at the Mayo Woodlands. The development, with a design that is equal parts building and landscape, won an award last year for progressive architecture from Architecture magazine. But the planned houses---glass and metal minimalist boxes with flat roofs and detached garages---are receiving a tepid response from the local community.
