A new ordinance bans new stores greater than 4,000 square feet effectively discouraging large chain stores in San Francisco's Castro district. The ordinance is aimed at protecting diverse, locally owned businesses and unique character for the quaint Castro district. The legislation also requires any new store greater thatn 2,000 square feet to go before the Planning Commission to get a permit giving residents the opportunity to protest.
