Omaha's Comeback

In recent years, the City of Omaha has made considerable progress in curbing and reversing negative trends, such as population loss and the deterioration of neighborhoods.

The City of Omaha's masterplan cites a number of problems that occurred between 1960 and 1990, included the decline of property values in downtown, the deterioration and job loss in central city neighborhoods, etc. North Omaha, alone, lost over 30% of its housing in the past 30 years. However, present conditions indicate that the City is showing signs of recovery, including population gain, new construction and riverfront revival. In addition, the Citys planning process has placed an emphasis on curbing urban sprawl and making " 'growth pay more of its way.' "

The article credits the success to community leadership that stems from various sectors, including "a dynamic private sector and, for the most part, progressive governments...."
