Saving Santa's Barbara's Gaviota Coast

Gaviota Coast from Goleta to Guadalupe in Santa Barbara County is one of the last uspoiled streteches of coast in Southern California.

U.S. Park Service researchers have closed their notebooks after months of public meetings in Santa Barbara to help them decide if the scenic Gaviota coast merits federal protection, possibly as a 75-mile-long National Seashore. The park service will issue its draft proposal within nine months. Gaviota Coast is one of the last unspoiled stretches of coast in Southern California, home to several endangered species, and fronts an area of sea famous for its varied marine life. About half of the area is owned by ranchers and farmers.
