As perhaps the most hands on manifestation of sustainability, the green building movement is exploding.
"From a humble accounting at the end of the '90s of only a few structures designed with environmental sustainability in mind, the list now has expanded to include more than 100 buildings certified using the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System created by the U.S. Green Building Council. More importantly, there are some 1200 buildings currently in the pipeline for which the builders are planning on using the LEED approach and/or seeking formal certification... If the dynamic growth of green building is any indication, a LEED standard for community design could be a turning point in the national effort to promote sustainability and smart growth."
