Political warfare erupts in Arizona over Maricopa County's $15.8 billion transportation plan. Mayors crash an opponent's private press conference.

"The stakes are high for the Valley, with the plan expected to finance 344 miles of new or improved freeways, 275 miles of new or improved arterial streets, an expanded regional bus system and 27 miles of additional light-rail routes to expand a rail system already approved by Phoenix voters.

The mayors of Phoenix, Mesa, Glendale, Scottsdale, Avondale and Queen Creek, accompanied by a horde of professional staff from the Maricopa Association of Governments, crashed the news conference and barraged their opponents with questions, comments and technical information designed to counter what they charge is erroneous criticism."
