Will Simon's plan for new headquarters preserve a view of the state capitol?
Mall giant Simon has released plans for a new 15-story limestone and glass headquarters building. The location of the 325,000 square foot building, however, has become a subject of controversy: the structure would inhabit the Capitol Commons, a downtown public park near the state capitol building. Proponents argue that the glass facade will reflect the Statehouse dome and the transparent three-story lobby would maintain north-south views. Skeptics, however, are critical of the decision to siphon off parkland--25,000 square feet, or 16% of the park--for the development.
