City With Smallest Ecological Footprint In Canada

The mining city of Sudbury -- once so polluted and denuded that NASA astronauts practiced for their moon landings there -- is being recognized for its innovative energy conservation strategies.

The report, issued by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, found that Sudbury had the lowest "ecological footprint" at 6.87 hectares, while the Canadian average was 7.25 hectares. The city is being commended for its use of wind, solar and geothermal power, as well as for its re-use of wasted methane gas, spent cooking oils, and small-scale hydroelectric electicity. Sudbury hopes to eventually spend half its energy budget on renewable power produced locally.
