There are almost 30 million Americans living within 10 miles of military sites slated for Superfund cleanup -- and the Bush Administration is passing the cost to clean up these contaminated bases to the affected communities.
Despite a 2000 campaign promise to make the military "comply with environmental laws by which all of us must live", President Bush has excused the military from all responsibility for cleaning up polluted sites, and Republican leaders in Congress are determined to push through additional exemptions pertaining to hazardous-waste disposal, hazardous-waste cleanups and air pollution.
