"When the race for the White House turns to the issue of protecting America's water, air, parks and wildlife, the differences between the two presidential candidates could not be more stark.

On the one hand is President Bush, who says that by reversing what he calls "extreme" environmental protections, he has helped businesses and the economy while still safeguarding the nation's natural resources..

On the other is Sen. John Kerry, the Democrat who vows to tighten environmental laws, hold polluters far more accountable than Bush has, and spend more money than his rival on an ambitious conservation agenda.
