Should town planners limit their role to physical planning?

The director of the Department of Architecture at the University of Lagos responds to charges by the former Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners that town planners should limit their role to physical planning:

"It is not an unusual phenomenon of modern societies to review laws guiding their development, to ensure that proper development patterns emerge to satisfy the dynamics of life and living, avoid incidences of collapsed building, urban slums, inappropriate professional application to development matters etc. This article therefore makes effort to review the existing laws in Nigerian, in relation to what obtains in Britain and the United States of America and see the relevance of their laws to Nigeria in formulating the best strategies for controlling our built environment."
