"[The Federation of Canadian Municipalities] is committed to maintaining the goal of reducing by half (to below 400,000) the number of households facing a severe housing burden (paying more than 50% of income) by 2010. FCM reiterates the overall goals and targets established in October 2000 to increase the supply of affordable housing, preserve and rehabilitate the existing affordable stock and to broaden the ongoing approach to directly address affordability problems with a rental assistance initiative." FCM maintains that a broader set of strategies and mechanisms, beyond the new FPT affordable housing program, are needed to generate a more complete, comprehensive and sustainable approach to improve the outcomes in achieving these targets."
