After three nights of public comment in August, citizens are still split over the future concepts of Ellis Square.

"In the end, they were pretty clear on two schemes," Flierl said. One: Open space. Or two: Bring back the old City Market, where produce and goods were sold until the early '50s when it was demolished to become a parking garage.

"Savannah is known worldwide for its plan of wards and squares. This design was the vision of Gen. James Oglethorpe, founder of the city. Ellis Square, located off Congress and Bryan streets, was one of the first four squares in Savannah, along with Johnson, Wright, and Telfair."
