New, wealthier residents could be using a neighborhood organization to push out older residents.
A gentrification battle in the Kirkwood neighborhood of Atlanta revolves around "one of the last old-style groceries" in the area, owned by a Korean immigrant. While "loyal customers [find the store] an irreplacable asset," newer residents think it "drags the neighborhood down," as fights and drug deals often take place out front. In Kirkwood, "many longtime patrons have been replaced by young professionals attracted to Kirkwood's historic Victorian and Craftsman bungalows, as well as its social and racial diversity...And although Kirkwood is still predominantly African-American, most decisions about its future are made by the predominantly white neighborhood organization."
