In the last five years, land trusts around the country have doubled the land under their ownership or easement---a total of 9 million acres that conserves farmland, forests, coastal land and scenic vistas.
The latest census from the Land Trust Alliance of over 1500 local and regional land trusts around the country reveals a rapid increase in the acres being added to their protection, with California, Maine, and Colorado leading in acreage under land trust ownership or easement. The number of land trusts in the last five years has grown as well, with sharp increases in organizations in the Southwest and Pacific regions.
