Munich city centre remains an attractive environment of dense low-rise buildings under a skyline of Baroque domes and Gothic spires. Recent developments of tall buildings have caused outrage in the normally placid Bavarian capital, leading to a citizen-sponsored poll this weekend that has resulted in a clear victory for the low-rise lobby. The vote is a democratic challenge to other cities considering skyscrapers: will you allow residents to decide on issues affecting the future appearance of their city, or are you afraid of what they might decide?
