Tolkien's House Designated A Landmark

Despite not having any special architectural features, the home of the famous author is given protected status.

The house where JRR Tolkien wrote the Hobbit and most of the Lord of the Rings at 20 Northmoor Road in Oxford is to be a Grade II listed building, according to the Heritage Minister Andrew McIntosh.

"The listed status means that any future alterations will have to respect the character of the building and its preservation must be taken into account in any redevelopment.

The house was built in 1924 by Fred Openshaw, a local architect, for bookshop-owner Basil Blackwell."
