The shadow of an unprecedented energy crisis looms over President Bush's second term in office.
Michael Klare, author of "Blood and Oil: The Dangers and Consequences of America's Growing Petroleum Dependency", shows that the United States' huge rate of energy consumption will make it extremely vulnerable in the near future as oil reserves dry up and global conflicts over oil ensue. "We have so organized our economy and society around the availability of cheap and abundant petroleum that we are severely ill-equipped to deal with the sort of shortages and supply disruptions that are likely to become the norm in the years ahead. (And) nothing (President Bush) has proposed to date even suggests a viable exit strategy from perpetual crisis."
