Editorial applauds suburban transit-oriented development and encourages officials to plan smartly.
When it comes to transit-oriented development, the Washington Post feels that the D.C. area is "a mixed bag of successes and failures." While some places are prime examples of dense, mixed-use development around subway stations, others like the Vienna station in Northern Virginia are a "forlon terminus fringed by surburban homes and parking lots." The recently approved Fairlee-Metro West development at this site has the potential to change that stereotype. However, the Post editorial staff warns that planners must effectively manage the influx of subway riders that is predicted. The newspaper also suggests including senior housing and office space on-site to encourage reverse commutes and off-peak transit trips.
