A new plan to revitalize Pittsburgh's long-ailing Fifth and Forbes corridor is anchored by space for hundreds of new housing units, de-emphasizing retail space.
Pittsburgh has long sought ways to reinvigorate its scenic, but ailing, downtown area. A new proposal put together by an ad-hoc committee, with advice from a Philadelphia developer, suggests that housing is key in revitalizing an area historically dominated by retail uses. New retail space is part of the proposal, but mainly as that which would support residential uses, such as dry-cleaners and convenience stores. The preservation of most of the old structures in the area further differentiates the scheme from one that was popularly rejected several years ago, that favored razing many of the buildings in the corridor.
