Hurricane Season Affects South Florida Labor Force

Groundbreakings in Miami-Dade County could be delayed by a shortage of construction workers, many of whom migrated north to repair homes damaged by last year's flurry of hurricanes.

Miami-Dade's construction industry should have a stellar year, with hundreds of mixed-use developments already under construction. However, future projects may face construction delays because many workers migrated to North Florida to repair homes damaged by last year's hurricanes. "It was their opportunity to start a business," Pepe Cancio, president and CEO of Supermix, said. "It was guaranteed work." Based on the number of residential projects coming on line, construction workers who stayed in South Florida will be highly sought, and prices will likely rise because of the short supply.
