UC Merced: Environmental Battle Heats Up

Supporters of a UC Merced campus have launched a lobbying campaign charging environmental critics as "elitists" who put the fairy shrimp ahead of students.

The lobbying campaign comes among increasing concerns that the UC campus which Governor Davis wants opened by 2004 could be delayed or derailed due to an environmental lawsuit. Even the university's consultants acknowledge that the UC's proposed 5,000-acre site sits within the state's largest intact stretch of seasonal wetlands that harbor several rare plants and animals, including species of fairy shrimp.
