Power officials stated Friday that the state's energy crisismay worsen if regulators don't ease air pollution restrictions. Many ofthe 1,000 power plants in California have been running at capacity andbeyond in order to compensate for the energy shortage, and many plantsare nearing air pollution limits outlined in their permits. TheCalifornia Independent System Operator and the U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency, the California Air Resources Board and local airdistrict regulators have been working together to find a solution thatwill keep air pollution down without further compromising electricitysupplies. Working on an individual plant basis, air districts areallowing plants to exceed emission limits for a fee that will go towardreducing air pollution in another capacity.
