Bombay's cotton mills are an opportunity for regeneration, not an impediment, says INTBAU India

A week-long design workshop run in Mumbai (Bombay) by INTBAU India and the Indian National Trust for Arts & Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has called for a rethink on the future of the city's old mills district. "This is one of the finest collections of mills in the world", said Regeneration Through Heritage director Fred Taggart. Speaking at the event, INTBAU Chair Robert Adam noted that the mill owners would realise much greater gains by selling small plots under a government-controlled masterplan. Current piecemeal sell-offs and demolitions are a recipe for disaster, he added. The workshop report says the creation of a renovated "mills quarter" is a unique opportunity for Mumbai to identify itself in the crowded South Asian urban scene.
