"In today’s global economy, multinational firms are extending their reach, developable land in cities is becoming increasingly scarce, and technology is allowing people to be more mobile in their work. Congested cities are calling for office buildings that integrate more strongly with the civic fabric around them. Greater awareness of the benefits of green design—both economic and environmental—is resulting in more buildings that respond to their particular climate. The need to compete in the global economy is creating demand for high-quality buildings that convey a distinctive identity. A survey of some recent and forthcoming office buildings around the world shows the pressures on office buildings to become better citizens of their urban environments and, in some cases, to take on some of the attributes of cities themselves."
