Honor students at the University of Utah use downtown Salt Lake City as a case study of public participation in the planning process.
University of Utah honor students "split off into committees reading up on downtown's history, examining the community's ethnic makeup, researching housing and gearing up for a final report. They met with city officials, urban planners, professors and architects to look at how to create a vibrant downtown." In addition, an ethnography committee examined the ethnic history of the neighborhood. Many had mixed reactions to the former red-light district that has recently been gentrifying.
