After long years of planning, the city of Miami has begun construction on two segments of the Miami River Greenway.
Although the idea dates to the 1970s, when the city began requiring new developments along the river to install public pathways next to the water, until recently only a few disconnected sections of riverwalk existed. Now, the high-rise condo boom downtown and along the river has given the plan new momentum. ''This is just the beginning,'' said Lavinia Freeman, program director for the Trust for Public Land, the nonprofit group helping pay for and plan the greenway, which will one day extend from Biscayne Bay along both banks of the 5.5-mile long river to its terminus near Miami International Airport.
