Community colleges in some northeast US states are playing greater roles in the redevelopment of their downtown areas.
"While many large colleges and universities are identified with cities, community colleges are more likely to be associated with the suburbs. But in parts of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, community colleges, often working closely with public officials, are taking important roles in the renewal of downtown areas." And development officials "say community colleges often bring broader economic benefits to downtown areas than traditional colleges do because their student bodies tend to be older and more diversified and many students already have jobs."
