Massachusetts' Population Drop Threatens Environment

Exodus from Massachusetts is bad news for urban vitality and services such as mass transit.

Massachusetts was the only state to lose population last year, according to the Census. While some local environmentalists cheer at the news, it is a bad sign for urban planning and the fight against sprawl. "Population is flat or declining in our major cities, which have the roads, sewer systems, and fast-food outlets to serve more people than they've got. At the same time, the population is rising and open space is disappearing in the suburbs beyond I-495, and even past our borders into Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island."
