Petty Island, home to bald eagle,s is under pressure to develop.
"Petty Island, owned by Citgo for the past 100 years were in negotiations with Cherokee Investment Partners of Raleigh, N.C. to develop the former refinery into homes and offices. In the spring of 2003 bald eagles were spotted, and the negotiations were sent into a tailspin. Citgo has offered to clean the land and donate it as open space to the state. However, the state has a different idea for the island. The town council voted to condemn Petty's Island, and pending the Supreme Court case will try to acquire the property for private development through eminent domain. Will the already endangered bald eagle lose it's battle for space?"
